1996 Military Aviation
The aeroplane demonstrated its military worth in the early 20th century. The Australian Aviation Corps was established as part of the army in 1914, and in 1921, the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) was formed. These stamps feature planes and a helicopter that the RAAF has flown over the years. They include the Beaufighter and Kittyhawk, the Sea Fury and Firefly, and the Kiowa and the Hornet.
They were illustrated by Norman Clifford, who worked for the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation during World War II before he became a commercial artist.
